MotoGP: Marc Marquez To Undergo Further Arm Surgery, 2022 Season In Jeopardy
Highlights
- Marc Marquez suffered an injury to his right arm in 2020 Spanish GP.
- Marquez underwent 3 surgeries on it, but the arm never fully recovered.
- He is set to undergo a 4th surgery; likely to miss out on 2022 season.
Marc Marquez was involved in an incident in the Spanish GP in 2020, in which the Spaniard badly broke his right arm. He underwent an operation on the right humerus, but it proved to be unsuccessful as he damaged the plate in his arm attempting to make a return to the MotoGP grid. He had to undergo a second surgery, which was unsuccessful too, as it resulted in an infection which stopped the healing process. This ultimately forced him to undergo a third surgery which resulted in him missing out on the entire 2020 campaign and the first two races of 2021.
However, despite the 3 surgeries, Marquez struggled with the power in his right shoulder at almost every track - especially the clockwise circuits - and had to limit his running in practice sessions to stay in best shape for the race. The problems were heightened as Honda gave its bike a complete overhaul in 2022, forcing Marquez to ride his bike in a non conventional fashion, which further aggravated his problems. Adding to this, his heavy crash in Indonesia gave him a concussion which in turn returned his double-vision problems, forcing him to miss out on the last 2 races of 2021 and the Argentinian GP this year.
Citing these problems, Marquez together with Honda has elected to abandon the fight for the 2022 MotoGP championship, and the Spaniard is set to undergo a surgery after the Italian GP giving the rider plenty of time to heal completely. Though a recovery period hasn't been specified, he is likely to miss out on the entire 2022 season.

"Unfortunately, his position on the bike is still not what he really needs to race as he wants to race and to match his expectations on a GP weekend. So, after analyzing with the medical doctors, with the group, and consulting with another doctor who is connected to our doctors in Spain, in the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, finally yesterday we had the news that a surgery can be done." Alberto Puig, Honda team boss explained. "This surgery can be done right now because the bone is ready. In the past it was not ready, it was soft and it was not recommended but now it is recommended" he added.
undefinedYou're a WARRIOR, and you'll be back stronger! ????

A word on Marquez's substitute is not out yet, though it is likely that test rider Stefan Bradl will stand in for him, as the rider replaced Marquez in 2020.
