For 2018, all MINI Cooper models will get a 7-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with a dual clutch setup for faster, aggressive gearshifts along with better fuel efficiency as well. The dual clutch transmission will be available on the 3-door MINIs, 5-door MINIs and the MINI Convertible as well. Of course, this will be an optional fitment and will be offered along with regular 6-speed manual transmission internationally.

MINI says that the principle behind the Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) has been drawn from motor racing. The new transmission setup will allow drivers to shift gears up without any torque interruption. Even with the throttle pinned down, the gearbox will pick the right gear up at the right time so as to build up speed as smoothly as possible. How a DCT operates is that one of the clutches works the odd ratios (1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th) and the other works the even ratios (2nd, 4th, 6th and reverse). At any given point in time, one of two clutches is closed.
The opening and closing of clutches helps the car to build up speed quicker. In this case, the gearbox is able to understand the intent of the driver and coupled with other inputs such as the driving mode the car is in, engine speed, road speed and respond proactively. For example, if the car needs to overtake, the gearbox will shift gears down to build up the revs rather than shift gears up.
In the cabin, MINI will also offer a new gear selector knob with the regular markings of an automatic MINI. One can select the 'S' mode by shifting the lever to the left, when at 'D' position. Rest other functions remain the same, which are 'P' for parking, 'R' for reverse and 'N' for neutral.
