Mercedes-Benz S400 Launched in India; Priced at Rs. 1.28 Crore
Expanding its ever-so-luxurious S-Class lineup, Mercedes-Benz has launched the new S400 in India, priced at Rs. 1.28 crore (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Expanding its ever-so-luxurious S-Class lineup, Mercedes-Benz has launched the new S400 in India, priced at Rs. 1.28 Crore (ex-showroom, Delhi). The new variant of the S-Class is positioned between the S350 and S500 trims, while also being the second petrol-powered version of the Stuttgart based automaker's flagship sedan. The S400 will be locally assembled at the Chakan facility and will be sold only with a petrol heart contrary to the hybrid derivative sold overseas.
The Mercedes S400 can be seen as the more efficiently running petrol S-Class when compared to the V8 powered S500, without taking away the prestige value. The S400 is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 engine tuned to produce 333hp of power and 480Nm of peak torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via the 7-speed G-Tronic automatic transmission.
In terms of creature comforts, the Mercedes S400 is loaded with all the creature comforts including the air balance package, seat memory function, chauffeur package, customisable interior upholstery as well as rear seat tables. The rear seats also get 10-inch screens for improved on-the-go entertainment, while the cabin also gets seven different ambient light option. All four passengers also get the luxurious 16-way seat massagers for relaxed cruising. Furthermore, you get a panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera and a 1540-watt Burmester sound system for acoustic needs.
That said, the S400 like the other Mercedes S-Class variants also misses out on the Magic Body Control that adjusts dampers based on the road conditions, using a radar scanner to scan the road surface. However, the Indian government regulations bar the use of radar scanners on public roads. Aesthetically, the new Mercedes-Benz S400 does not get any changes compared to the other versions, save for the badging on the boot lid and continues to retain the striking lines.
Interestingly, Managing Director and CEO, Roland Folger, Mercedes-Benz India, said to carandbike that the S400 Hybrid could make it to India later in the timeline, but only once the country moves to BS-VI. However, that is only expected towards the end of the decade. Also speaking about its most popular sedan in the country, Roland conveyed that the next generation E-Class will only arrive at Indian shores in 2017.
With the new S400, the Mercedes S-Class lineup now expands to nine variants, also including the two coupe versions, two Maybach variants and two S-Guard armoured derivatives. The German car maker has had an eventful 2015, topping the sales chart and the company is looking to maintain the same growth this year as well. With 12 products planned to launch throughout the year, the S400 is the third and automaker will be bringing some serious competition to different segments.
