Highlights

  • Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain is built on the E-Class Estate
  • The car gets crossover-like styling with increased ground clearance
  • The Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain will rival the Volvo V90 Cross Country
All-terrain vehicles and crossovers have recently gained quite a bit of popularity in several markets. Audi was one of the first few luxury carmakers to test the waters with the Audi A6 Allroad, and most recently we saw Swedish carmaker, Volvo, enter this niche segment with the V90 Cross Country. Following suit, now rival Mercedes-Benz has decided to try its luck in this growing market by entering the space with the new E-Class All-Terrain.

Now, essentially the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain is the regular E-Class Estate under the skin, but there are certain features that justify it 'all-terrain' tag. For instance, the vehicle comes with a more generous ground clearance compared to the E-Class Estate along with plastic cladding on the wheel arches and under the body. In fact, both the front and rear section of the car gets skid plates for the added protection, just for when you decide to do some mild off-roading.

Other features that will make it a capable all-terrain vehicle include Mercedes-Benz's signature 4MATIC all-wheel drive system along with the company's Air Body Control multi-chamber air suspension. The model also comes with the option of three different sets of alloy wheels in 19-inch and 20-inch sizes.

The styling of the car is inspired from the new-gen the latest E-Class Estate and the new-gen E-Class sedan, which we drove early this year. Up front, the car gets large twin chrome slats on the honeycomb pattern grille with Mercedes' three-pointed-star at the centre. The grille is flanked by the carmaker signature LED MultiBeam headlamps couples with eyebrow-like LED daytime running lights. The new E-Class All-Terrain also gets a new front bumper with a wide central air dam and three horizontal air intakes below it and a skid plate.

The side profile is also very much similar to the regular Estate with the only difference being the plastic cladding and the increased ground clearance, while the only change to the rear profile of the car is the new bumper, rear diffuser and skid plate.

While more information about the powertrain options is yet to be revealed, Mercedes will initially launch the new E-Class All-Terrain mated to a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine that is capable of making 191bhp and develops 400Nm of torque. The motor will be paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and is powerful enough to propel this big wagon crossover from 0 to 100 km/h in a little over 8-seconds before hitting a top speed of 232 km/h.
