Highlights
- The new GT4 race car will be based on the Mercedes-AMG GT R
- The new vehicle will incorporate the GT R's design & engineering elements
- The car will see a number of design and mechanical changes
Mercedes-AMG, the performance arm of the German luxury carmaker is currently working on a new GT4 race car based on its road-going sports coupe AMG GT R. The Stuttgart-based carmaker has released the initial design images of the car that reveal a host of changes that will be made to the new GT4 race car. The new GT4 racer comes as Mercedes-AMG attempts to expand its Customer Sports racing program; the automaker already has a GT3 car based on the Mercedes-AMG GT.
Mercedes-AMG claims that this new vehicle will incorporate the design and engineering elements based on the Mercedes-AMG GT R, which was launched earlier this year. The company says, "As with any Mercedes-AMG product, our newest "top athlete" will be designed with the highest level of safety and user-friendliness in mind during the development process."
As for the car itself, based on the images we can truly say that Mercedes-AMG's upcoming GT4 looks wicked with the metallic paint job and dark green racing stripe and side graphics adding to its sporty character. The front grille with vertical chrome slats and the LED headlamps remain unchanged but the car will get a new front bumper with larger air intakes and a carbon fibre chin blade. There is also a new muscular hood with huge vents and other prominent new aerodynamic additions up front. Towards the side profile, the slick tyres get a nice green ring on the walls and racing number '4' is printed on each side of the door. There is also an enormous wing at the rear for increased downforce, slightly redesigned rear bumper and a new twin exhaust system.
Mercedes-AMG hasn't revealed any specification or details about the powertrain but we quite sure that the figures will be impressive. This is considering the regular GT R itself comes with a 4.0-litre V-8 with twin turbochargers and direct injection that churns out a whooping 577bhp and develops peak torque of 700Nm. The engine comes mated to a 7-speed, AMG SPEEDSHIFT dual-clutch transmission that sends power to the rear wheels and propels the car to go from 0 to 100 km/h in mere 3.6 seconds before it reaches its top speed of 318 km/h.
