In addition to vehicles produced at the Haryana plants, Maruti Suzuki also sources vehicles from the Suzuki Motor Gujarat (SMG) in Gujarat, which is wholly owned by its parent company Suzuki Motor Corporation. The upcoming plant in Sonipat will replace the company's Gurugram facility, which was the company first production facility in India, and from where the iconic Maruti 800 was rolled out in 1983. However, the facility is no longer convenient for the company. Right now, there are several residential areas nearby, which has led to issues of traffic and road congestion.
