Maruti to Set Up Driver Training and Research Institute in Andhra Pradesh

Maruti Suzuki India, the country's largest carmaker today announced signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Andhra Pradesh to set up an Institute of Driving Training and Traffic Research in the state (IDTR). In the official statement released by the company, the carmaker said that it will also manage and run the institute to offer professional driver training and promote safe driving and make people employable with additional training. This will be Maruti Suzuki's first IDTR in South India and will be located in at Venkatachalam village in Darsi, Prakasham district of the state.

Maruti has stated that the institute has been set up under the PPP model, and will function similar to other IDTRs including All Gujarat Institute of Driving, Technical Training and Research (AGIDTTR), Vadodara. Mahesh Rajoria, Assistant Vice President (Driving Training), Maruti Suzuki, said, "The inception of Driving Training and Traffic Research Institutes was with an aim to upscale professional driver training and lay down the ground rules for safe driving. Maruti Suzuki has been working on this front for over a decade now. I am confident that our experience in this field of road safety will add immense value to this newest facility."

According to the statement issued by the company, the MoU was signed by N. Balasubramanyam, Transport Commissioner, State of Andhra Pradesh and Mahesh Rajoria, Assistant Vice President (Driving Training), Maruti Suzuki India Limited in the presence of dignitaries from Government of Andhra Pradesh and Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT).

The company has said that, with this initiative it plans to promote road safety and driving as an employment opportunity among the tribal youth of Andhra Pradesh. For that Maruti also plans to collaborate with the government departments in the state like the Tribal Development Department. In addition the company also plans to advise and support the Government for research on matters related to road safety, driving and any other matter that can contribute to road safety and facilitate in improving the transport system in the state.

Talking about the infrastructure needs, Maruti said that the Institute will spread across 20 acres of land, which will be provided by the Andhra Pradesh Government. The facility is set to be built as per the MoRTH guidelines shall consist of an institute building, a hostel and training tracks will all required formation. The company has claimed that the infrastructure is expected to be complete by 2018.
