While the previous-gen Swift is still doing some good numbers, but the car has clearly become dated now and Hyundai's Grand i10 facelift, has been giving the Swift some tough competition. In fact, Hyundai sold and it also had a massive lead of over 3,000 units in December 2017, against the Swift. So, is the new Swift equipped enough to compete with the new Grand i10? Well, let's put everything down on paper and find out.

Exterior Styling and Dimensions:
Stating with the new-gen Maruti Suzuki Swift, the car is based on the company's Heartect platform, which has made the car about 90 kg lighter than the outgoing model. The new Swift also looks a lot bolder and modern with the new single-frame grille, bug-eyed projector headlamps with stylish LED DRLs, pronounced front bumper, floating roof design, new alloys and LED taillamps. The top-end model of the car also features new diamond cut alloy wheels. The new platform has also helped in making the new Swift wider by 40 mm at 1,735 mm and increased the wheelbase by 20 mm at 2,450 mm while reducing the overall length by 10 mm to 3840 mm and keeping the height unchanged at 1,530 mm. These dimensional changes have aided in increasing the cabin space, which earlier wasn't a strong suit of the Swift.

The Hyundai Grand i10, on the other hand, might not be as good looking as the new Swift, but with the new facelift, the car surely looks a lot better than the older model. In line with Hyundai's latest design language, the Grand i10 comes with a similar large single-frame grille and cascading design, with LED daytime running light position on the bumper beside the foglamps. The Grand i10 doesn't get projector headlamps, even in the top-end model, but it does come with nicer looking diamond cut alloy wheels. The rear comes with stylish wraparound taillamps, and a wide black insert with reflectors on the bumper. The Grand i10 is smaller than the Swift across dimension with a total length of 3,765 mm, the width of 1,660 mm, a height of 1,520 mm and a wheelbase of 2,245 mm.
Cabin Design and Features:
The new Maruti Suzuki Swift gets an all-new cabin with all-black interior and silver inserts on the dashboard. Like the Dzire, the Swift also gets a new flat-bottom steering wheel with controls for music, telephony and more. The centre console layout is positioned towards the driver and while SmartPlay infotainment system is same as the other Maruti models, with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Mirror Link, the car gets a new stylish dial system for climate control. The power window and ORVM controls have also been picked up from the Swift sibling models, but the seats are now and offer decent comfort and lumbar support.

The Grand i10, in comparison, features a very moderate-looking cabin with dual tone black-beige colour scheme, round air con vents, touchscreen infotainment system, which also comes with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Mirror Link, and a similar multi-function steering wheel. The overall cabin space is lesser but the seats offer pretty similar comfort. Overall the Grand i10's cabin looks a tad dull compared to the Swift's cabin.
Engine and Transmission:
The Maruti Suzuki Swift sees no change in terms engine options and comes powered by the same 82 bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine and 74 bhp 1.3-litre diesel motor. A 5-speed manual gearbox comes as standard, along with an optional 5-speed auto gear shift (AGS) transmission in both models. In comparison, the Grand i10 also gets and an 82 bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 74 bhp 1.2-litre diesel engine. The petrol version gets a 5-speed manual gearbox with an optional 4-speed automatic torque converter, while the diesel model comes with a 5-speed manual unit as standard.
Price and Expectation:
Maruti Suzuki will launch the new-gen Swift in February at the 2018 Auto Expo the car is expected to come with a slight premium over the asking price of the current model. The Hyundai Grand i10 however, is priced in the range of Rs. 4.59 lakh to Rs. 7.37 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). In any case, considering all the features the new Swift has to offer the top-end model will be a lot more expensive than the top-end model of the Grand i10. While like all other cars, the Swift success depends on smart pricing but considering the brand value that the car owns, we won't be surprised if the Swift's sales see a major boost post-launch, something that we saw with Dzire's sales.
