Maruti-Suzuki Sales Grow in April 2017

Sales for India's largest auto maker, Maruti Suzuki, grew in April 2017 as compared to March 2017 and also showcased a year on year growth as compared to April 2016. The growth was due to great sales of smaller cars like the Alto and the Wagon R along with good monthly sales figures for the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz that has recently moved to the Nexa sales channel.

Maruti Suzuki registered a total sales of 1,51,215 units in the month of April 2017. This included domestic sales of 1,44,492 units and export sales of 6723 units. As compared to April 2016, year on year sales for the carmaker were up by 23.4 per cent in the domestic sector. Exports though were down by 29.4 per cent as compared to April 2016. The total year on year increase in percentage was at 19.5 per cent. Compared to the previous month of March 2017 (1,27,999 units) though domestic sales were up 12.88 per cent while exports compared to March 2017 (11,764 units) were down by 42 per cent. Maruti has not officially commented on the decline in exports, however, such occurrences are usual in the export segment due to delays in shipping processes, etc.

The big gainer in the Maruti Suzuki stable though was the Ciaz. The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz was moved to the Nexa sales channel at the very end of March and April 2017 was the first month for the Honda City competitor alongside the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Ignis and S-Cross. The move from the standard Maruti Suzuki dealers to the Nexa sales channel seems to have paid off for the manufacturer as the car saw a monthly increase of 42.82 per cent from 4918 units in March to 7024 units in April. Sales of cars like the Alto and the Wagon R for the month of April 2017 showcased good growth in terms of sales of 25.58 per cent over March 2017 and a year on year growth of 21.9 per cent over the same period in 2016 after marginally slumping last month.

Sales for the compact segment in April 2017, which consists of cars like the Swift, Baleno and the recently launched Ignis also saw a marginal growth of 4.75 per cent over last month and a growth of 39.1 per cent as compared to April last year with the likes of updated products like the Ignis coming into play and the new Gujrat plant adding to the total output for the Maruti Suzuki Baleno.

Sales for the passenger van segment, which consists of the likes of the Omni and the Eeco were up by 19.86 per cent for the month of April 2017 (13,938 units) as compared to March 2017 (11,628 units). Year on year sales though, as compared to April 2016 (14,520 units), the segment was marginally lower by 4 per cent. The utility vehicle segment which includes vehicles like the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Maruti Suzuki S-Cross and the popular Vitara Brezza, showcased a growth of 12.70 per cent from April 2017 (20,638 units) as compared to March 2017 (18,311 units) and a year on year growth of 28.63 per cent as compared to sales in April 2016 (16,044 units).
