Maruti Suzuki India that had launched the Celerio last year, is now planning to bring in the diesel engine powered version of the small hatchback in the country. Expected to be launched by the festive season this year, the Celerio diesel will become the most fuel-efficient car in the country with an expected mileage of over 30Km/l. Just so you know, the The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz diesel with over 26Km/l of mileage, currently, is the most fuel efficient car in India.

The company has already started testing the diesel engined model on Indian roads. Powering the vehicle will be a small 800cc diesel unit that will, later on, power several other entry level hatches and an LCV. This engine will first be first fitted in the LCV, codenamed Y9T, which is expected to be launched very soon.

Though there are no exact details out on the small diesel powertrain, it is likely to churn out a maximum power output of around 50bhp with the help of a turbocharger. Since the AMT-equipped model of the Celerio is quite popular, we expect MSI to bring in the diesel AMT as well.

Upon its launch, the Celerio diesel will rival Chevrolet Beat diesel, and Tata's upcoming small hatchback - the Kite.
