Mahindra's SUV Production Drops 42% In May 2021

Mahindra & Mahindra has announced production figures for the month of May 2021. The home-grown utility vehicle manufacturer has witnessed a 42.28 per cent Month-on-Month (MoM) decline in SUV production against April 2021. Last month the home-grown utility vehicle manufacturer produced 10,217 SUVs, as compared to 17,704 units manufactured in April 2021. Do note, the company's production in May 2020 was impacted due to lockdown-like restrictions imposed to control the spread of the coronavirus. Last month, the company had temporarily halted operations at its manufacturing plants for annual maintenance amid the COVID-19 surge.

In May 2021 Mahindra only produced Treo electric three-wheeler in India, which stood at 120 units

As for three-wheelers and light commercial vehicles, the company manufactured 1,388 units last month 2021 compared to 2,680 units in April 2021, registering a de-growth of 48 per cent. In May 2021, the company produced only 120 units of Treo electric three-wheeler in India. Compared to 712 electric vehicles produced in April 2021, the company recorded a Month-on-Month decline of 83 per cent. In May 2020, the company's EV production too stood at zero. Production of Commercial Vehicles declined to 9,987 units in May 2021, compared to 16,549 units in April.

As for sales, the company's overall auto sales (passenger vehicles+ commercial vehicles+ exports) for May 2021 stood at 17,447 units compared to 36437 vehicles sold in April 2021, recording a Month-on-Month (MoM) decline of over 52 per cent. Mahindra's Utility Vehicle (UV) segment accounted for 7,748 units in May 2021, registering a 107 per cent growth compared to the 3745 vehicles sold during the same month last year. The company also exported 1935 units from India in May, out of which SUVs accounted for 755 units.

Announcing the sales numbers for May 2021, Veejay Nakra, Chief Executive Officer, Automotive Division, M&M Ltd. has said, "We are seeing a strong growth momentum for our entire product portfolio. The Thar is clocking robust bookings, despite extended waiting periods. XUV300 has been a tremendous success and continues to see strong demand. Our power brands (Scorpio and Bolero) continue to do well. With the cases coming down and gradual opening up of markets, we foresee strong demand rebound. We are working closely with our supplier partners to manage supply chain issues and meet the market demand."
