Mahindra & Mahindra, the home-grown utility vehicle manufacturer, will develop Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV) prototypes for the United States Postal Service (USPS). Mahindra, along with the five other vehicle manufacturers USPS selected to produce prototypes for testing and evaluation, will have nearly a year from contract award to design and deliver their prototypes.

Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group, said, "We are excited to be part of the USPS NGDV prototype program. The USPS has recognized Mahindra's engineering proposal and selected us for vehicle development and prototype delivery. This is a strategic development in Mahindra's ambition to become a global mobility player."

Mahindra, which started manufacturing the post war Willys Overland Jeep in 1949, has a 70-year-long history of building right-hand drive commercial vehicles. The proposal for NGDV prototypes for the USPS was led by Southeast Michigan-based Mahindra North American Technical Center (MNATC). MNATC's team submitted a proposal emphasizing safety, ergonomics, and fuel economy all within a ground-up approach to vehicle integration.

For the curious minds, the Mahindra North American Technical Center (MNATC) is an automotive design, engineering, and vehicle development center. Established in 2013, the MNATC team comprises veteran designers and engineers, working with affiliate Mahindra automotive teams in India, Korea, and Italy.

Rick Haas, President and COO, MNATC, remarked, "The USPS is looking for a modern, safe and efficient vehicle to meet their daily delivery and operational needs. Our team has significant global experience engineering some of the best trucks ever produced. We've spent thousands of hours ensuring this proposal will optimize driver and pedestrian safety and provide the USPS with a modern and reliable vehicle architecture that can easily adapt to a broad variety of future scenarios."
