The Volkswagen Tiguan long-wheelbase version is here and the car will be unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2017 following which it will also be showcased at the Geneva Motor Show, which will see it make its European debut. While there was a sketch that the company revealed just yesterday, Volkswagen has gone ahead and revealed the images of the long wheelbase version of the Tiguan. We've already told you about the long wheelbase version coming which will be a seven seater when we drove the VolkswagenTiguan earlier this year. We also told you that the flexibility of the platform, helps the Volkswagen achieve this.

Sales of the car will start next year but will be restricted to North America, China, and Europe. The European-market version will be known as Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace; elsewhere it will simply be badged Tiguan L. Volkswagen has let on a few details about the Allspace. It confirmed that the distance between the Tiguan's axles has grown by 11 centimetres. Combined with a longer rear overhang, the bigger body frees up enough space in the trunk for another pair of seats. The car shares the front fascia with the smaller, 5-seater VW Tiguan SUV and the extension from the C-Pillar is very distinct.

The Volkswagen Tiguan L looks similar to the 5-seater version

The engine that the long-wheelbase Volkswagen Tiguan is likely to get is the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder motor which will send power to the front wheels or all four wheels via VW's 8-speed automatic transmission.

The longer Tiguan is based on VW's modular MQB chassis and will be built alongside the five-seater version in Puebla, Mexico, which is the largest VW plant outside Germany. More details will piur out closer to its public debut at the NAIAS. What's also interesting is that the SUV will also lock horns with the upcoming Skoda Kodiaq 7-seater SUV and we've driven this one too.

The cabin of the Volkswagen Tiguan is a familiar one

Besides the rather large SUV, Volkswagen has plans for a number of smaller SUVs, including a production version of the Golf-sized T-Roc and a Polo-based SUV which is likely to be called T-Cross. We expect the T-Cross to come to India and in fact, we think that the car manufacturer will bring it to India in 2018 with the Auto Expo forming a stage to propel the company’s newest member. The 5-seater Volkswagen Tiguan will hit showrooms in India next year and it’ll take the CBU route; so yes. it’ll compete with the likes of the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA and the BMW X1.
