  • The Jeep Wrangler 3-door version was spotted at the Ranjangaon plant
  • The 3-door version is powered by a 281bhp, 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine
  • Jeep's future plans include a more mainstream assault on the SUV market
Jeep Wrangler, the iconic off-roader from the American carmaker is finally here in India. While the enthusiasts were hoping for the much more popular 3-door version, the Fiat-owned carmaker decided that a more practical choice would be to launch the extended 5-door version - Wrangler Unlimited in the country. But now it seems that Jeep India is considering bringing in the 3-door Wrangler as well, as we recently spotted the SUV at the company's Ranjangaon plant, near Pune.

So why are we so excited about the 3-door Wrangler? Well, apart from the fact that the original classic Wranglers were all 3-door versions, this particular version of the SUV is a bit more fun and capable off-roader than the extended wheelbase model - Wrangler Unlimited, which we drove a few months back. More interestingly, the 3-door Wrangler is powered by a monstrous 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine that is capable of churning out a maximum of 281bhp and develops a monstrous peak torque of 352Nm. Globally the Wrangler comes with the option of both a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 5-speed automatic transmission, but the India-spec model will only get the latter.

Along with this high-torque engine, the Wrangler's off-roading spirit is further fuelled by features like low-range transfer box and locking differentials, off-road tyres and a very capable Command-Trac Shift-On-The-Fly Part-Time 4-wheel-drive (4WD) system. All these together enables the Jeep Wrangler to make minced meat of almost every single obstacle you throw at it. You can literally climb every mountain and cross every stream without really breaking a sweat - or breaking the machine itself!

In terms of design, the only difference between the standard Wrangler and the Wrangler Unlimited is that the latter comes with an extended wheelbase to fit in that extra row of seat. On the other hand, in the styling department, the front of the SUVs look exactly the same with Jeep's signature seven-slat grille, large round headlamps and the beefy front bumper with skid plates along with the removable black hard top at the rear.
