Jeep has revealed revealed the new Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L – the long-wheelbase versions of its flagship SUVs it debuted last year at the 2022 New York Auto Show. The new SUVs, aside from the stretched wheelbase also receive the brand's new Hurricane twin-turbo in-line six-cylinder petrol engines. Also revealed was a Carbide Edition for the Wagoneer L with blacked-out cosmetic detailing and a new Grand Cherokee 4xe High Altitude.
Jim Morrison, senior vice president and head of Jeep brand North America said, “The new Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L long-wheelbase models give our customers more: a more efficient and more powerful powertrain with the all-new Hurricane twin-turbo engines, and even more space, delivering best-in-class overall passenger volume, second-row legroom and cargo volume behind the third row, all while maintaining best-in-class towing capability of 10,000 pounds and a rewarding driving experience that is confidence-inspiring.”
The most noticeable change to the L models comes in their size. Both models get a wheelbase stretched by about 178mm (7 inches) with the overall length up by 305 mm (12 inches) over the standard models. Jeep says that not only does the added size make the two SUVs more spacious but there is additional cargo space to be had as well over the standard-wheelbase models. Jeep claims that both cars not only offer best in class overall cabin space but also best in class second-row room and best in class cargo space behind the third row. Both SUVs are available in 7-seat and 8-seat configurations.
Jeep says it made a number of changes under the skin to the Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L including giving it a new rear floor and rear ladder structure, new seat brackets and reinforcements for the third row, new frame centre rails and rear rail extensions and a new rear tub too. The carmaker said that additionally multiple body components were crafted from lightweight high-strength aluminium and steel to help keep weight in check.
Coming to the engines, both SUV get Jeep's new Hurricane twin-turbo petrol engines. Jeep claims its new in-line six-cylinder mills offer V8 engine rivalling performance while improving on fuel economy than their larger counterparts. The new six-cylinder engines feature dual low-inertia high-flow turbochargers claimed to improve throttle responses along with featuring a high-pressure direct injection system and a special low-friction wear coating inside the cylinders.
In the Wagoneer the Hurricane petrol mill develops 420 bhp and 635 Nm while the Hurricane 510 mill in the Grand Wagoneer pumps out 510 bhp and 680 Nm of torque. An 8-speed automatic gearbox is standard as is four-wheel drive. Depending on the configuration, the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are available with three different 4x4 systems - Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II – offering varying degrees of off-road prowess. Both SUVs also get Jeep's Selec-Terrain terrain management system.
For the suspension, the Wagoneer L gets steel springs as standard with adaptive air suspension available as an option. The Grand Wagoneer L meanwhile gets adaptive air suspension as standard.
Inside the cabin, as with the standard wheelbase models, both SUVs are loaded with tech. Leather upholstery is standard with the front seats offering up to 24-way power adjustability depending on the model and variant. Then there is the number of screens. The Grand Wagoneer gets you dual 10.1-inch and 12-inch central touchscreens, a 10.25-inch touchscreen for the co-driver, Wireless smartphone integration, Alexa support, connected tech, 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, rear-seat entertainment (optional), a configurable full-colour heads up display, camera-based rear-view mirror and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The Wagoneer too gets a number of displays but not as many as on the Grand Wagoneer and with a smaller 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.
Both models also get a host of safety systems onboard including ADAS features such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and rear cross-traffic detection.
Jeep also announced a limited run of 2022 Grand Wagoneer will receive the new Hurricane twin-turbo petrol engines. The new Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L are meanwhile expected to go on sale in the US later in the year.
