Highlights
- Lot of Jeep enthusiasts have asked for a Jeep pickup truck
- The pickup truck will mostly be based on the new-gen Wrangler
- Jeep will also offer a plug-in hybrid on the new-gen Wrangler
Jeep has confirmed that it will be launching a pickup in early 2019 and in all probability; it will be based on the new-generation Jeep Wrangler that the company unveiled recently at the ongoing LA Auto Show. Talking about the Pickup first, Jeep has said that some of the die-hard enthusiasts of the iconic SUV brand have been asking for a pickup for a long time now. And therefore, Jeep decided to act upon the same. From what we hear, the Wrangler Pickup will be using a lot more aluminium panels in order to keep a check on weight. Of course, the SUV will have the Wrangler's legendary off-road ability and load-hauling abilities.

As far as engine options are concerned, the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 and an 8-speed automatic will most probably be offered. Jeep might offer a diesel engine option too but that is unconfirmed at this point in time. Also, the engine will be paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission, with a manual option that could be brought in at a later stage. The Jeep Wrangler Pickup could be offered in both, a single cab and a double-cab variant as well. The Jeep Wrangler Pickup is expected to go into production in late 2018 at the company's manufacturing facility in Toledo, Ohio.
Jeep also confirmed that it will be offering a plug-in hybrid by 2020. Mike Manley, Head of Jeep Brand, said that this is just a step in 'future-proofing' one of the most iconic SUVs. The company will start with offering a plug-in hybrid engine option with the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine and will be called eTorque. The hybrid engine will offer regenerative braking, start-stop system and an electric motor as well. The total power output will be around 270 bhp and the total torque output will be around 400 Nm.
