8 Best Mileage Cars in India
Highlights
- 4 Maruti Suzuki cars are amongst the most fuel-efficient cars in India
- The list includes mostly hatchbacks
- Maruti Suzuki Ciaz SHVS delivers highest mileage at 28.09km/l
P.S: The claimed mileage for each car is derived by tests done by ARAI under standard conditions.
1. Maruti Suzuki Ciaz SHVS
(Maruti Suzuki Ciaz SHVS)
After SX4 failed to garner numbers in the mid-sized sedan segment for the nation's biggest automobile manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki India decided to enter a new contestant in the race i.e. the all-new Ciaz. Apart from the regular petrol and diesel variants, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is now also available in diesel hybrid variant.
Called the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) hybrid, the car comes with an integrated starter generator, a larger capacity battery, and start-stop technology that help the vehicle return better mileage. While the old Maruti Ciaz diesel had an ARAI certified mileage of 26.21Km/l, the Ciaz SHVS returns an outstanding 28.09Km/l. This effectively makes the Ciaz SHVS hybrid India's most fuel-efficient car.
2. Maruti Suzuki Celerio
(Maruti Suzuki Celerio)
Launched initially in petrol version, Maruti Suzuki Celerio gained popularity for being the first AMT equipped hatchback in India. The diesel version followed the suit and is claimed to deliver 27.62km/l, making it the second most fuel-efficient car in India.
Powering the Maruti Celerio Diesel is a 793cc, 2-cylinder diesel engine that has been developed locally by Maruti with an investment of over Rs. 900 crore. The cylinder block of this new small engine is all aluminium and gets a compact fuel distribution system along with a turbocharger.
This engine churns out a maximum power output of 47bhp and 125Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and does not come with the option of an AMT. Petrol powered Celerio is equally frugal at 23.1km/l.
3. Maruti Baleno Diesel
(Maruti Baleno Diesel)
Maruti’s premium hatchback Baleno has emerged as a stern competitor to segment favourite Hyundai Elite i20. Contemporary exterior styling, spacious cabin and a bunch of comfort features make it a worthy contender in the B+ segment.
Under the hood, Maruti Suzuki Baleno features same 1.2 litre petrol and Fiat sourced 1.3 litre DDiS engine that power Swift hatchback. The 1.3 litre Multijet diesel engine powering Baleno is good for 83bhp of power and 190Nm of torque and has been tuned to deliver an excellent mileage of 27.39 km/l.
4. Honda Jazz Diesel
(Honda Jazz Diesel)
Equipped with an all-new design, Honda Jazz made a comeback in India last year. The new-generation Honda Jazz's front profile gets City-inspired head-lamps with integrated static bending lights, grille with chrome lining and piano black finish among other changes.
However, the biggest change is under the hood as it is now available with a diesel engine. The vehicle comes with two engine options - 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel and 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol - both of which power the Amaze as well.
The diesel unit, mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, churns out 99bhp & 200Nm and is claimed deliver an ARAI-certified mileage of 27.3km/l. Though the diesel engine used by the Jazz is the same that powers the City, the former with 8 per cent taller gear ratios return better mileage.
5. Tata Tiago
(Tata Tiago)
Tata recently launched its much talked about Tiago hatchback which was earlier christened Zica. Rolled out at an introductory price of Rs 3.20 lakh for the base petrol variant, Tiago is a lucrative option in the entry level segment rivalling the likes of Hyundai i10 and Maruti Suzuki Celerio.
Based on the XO platform, the hatchback is built from ground up and features a revamped chassis that claims better handling, rigidity and safety. In terms of design, it is a huge step up from the mundane styling seen in previous hatchbacks from Tata.
Available in petrol and diesel guise, the 1.2 litre Revotron petrol engine powers the petrol variants and for diesel range, it gets a 1.05 litre Revotorq unit. Mated to a five-speed manual transmission, the more frugal diesel engine puts out 67bhp and 140Nm and returns ARAI rated mileage of 27.28 km/l. The petrol unit on the other hand promises 23.4km/l.
6. Renault Kwid
(Renault Kwid)
Renault’s Alto rivalling budget hatchback, Kwid struck a chord with customers with it’s out of the box styling and SUV-like looks. Design is indubitably the USP of this French make and imposing mileage adds to its credibility.
Interiors are designed in line with rivals and it misses out on a couple of features usually absent in A segment hatchbacks. Currently Renault Kwid is available with a 800cc petrol engine mated to a manual transmission but a 1.0 litre variant will soon be added to the line-up along an AMT version.
The 800cc, three cylinder petrol engine powering Kwid makes a good 53bhp and is claimed to return ARAI certified mileage of 25.17 km/l.
7. 2016 Maruti Suzuki Alto 800
(Maruti Suzuki Alto 800)
Maruti has recently rolled out facelift version of its Alto 800 mini-hatchback featuring cosmetic and mechanical updates. Most of the changes are made to the front profile whereas inside the cabin, the hatchback gets a couple of additional features.
8. Tata Nano GenX
Launched amid galore hype, Tata’s ambitious Nano could not live up to the expectations of the customers and carmaker alike. After various revisions and upgrades the GenX version finally looks way better than the previous generation model.
Under the hood, Tata Nano GenX gets a 624cc, two cylinder petrol engine churning out 38PS and 51Nm. Transmission duties are taken care of by a manual gearbox and there is also an option for an Easy Shift Automated Manual Transmission on select variants.
There is no substantial change in the power output of the petrol unit but it has certainly come a long way when it comes to mileage rated at 23.1km/l.
