Highlights

  • The problem is due to a fault in the rear wiring harness
  • As many 7,392 bikes will be affected by the recall
  • The recall is only for bikes in the US

Indian Motorcycle has issued a recall for the Roadmaster in the US over an issue with water leakage into the Roadmaster's rear wiring harness. As many as 7,392 Indian Roadmaster motorcycles manufactured from 2015 to 2017 have been recalled. The issue is that water may enter the trunk wiring harness, potentially causing the brake light to remain illuminated even when the brakes are not applied. If that happens, a vehicle behind the motorcycle may not know when the motorcycle is actually slowing, increasing the risk of a crash.

Indian is expected to notify owners, and dealers will replace the trunk wiring harness with an updated harness that contains sealing plugs in the connectors, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on January 30, 2018. The Indian Roadmaster is the flagship motorcycle in Indian's touring line-up and is powered by a 1811 cc, v-twin, ThunderStroke 111 engine which makes 150 Nm of peak torque at 2900 rpm. The Roadmaster is a big bike with a kerb weight of 421 kg, and retails for over Rs. 39 lakh in India.

So far, there's no word on if the recall will affect any of the bikes sold in India. Indian Motorcycle has also started teasing a new variant of the Roadmaster, called the Indian Roadmaster Elite, which is also expected to be launched in India soon.
