India Has Achieved 10% Ethanol Blending In Petrol 5 Months Ahead Of Target: PM Modi

Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India recently announced that they have achieved 10 per cent ethanol blending in petrol. Tweeting about the achievement, Modi said the task was completed five months ahead of the November 2022 target. The prime minister also stated that this was indeed a major accomplishment for India, given the fact that ethanol blending in petrol was hardly 1.5 per cent in FY 2013-14 and about 5 per cent by FY 2019-20. The announcement was made by the PM on the occasion of the 2022 World Environment Day, on June 5, speaking at a programme on Save Soil Movement.

This is a major accomplishment given that blending was hardly 1.5% in 2013-14 and 5% in 2019-20: PM @narendramodi
Prime Minister Modi says that achieving 10 per cent ethanol blending target has resulted in three major advantages. Firstly, it has resulted in the reduction of 27 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions, secondly, India has managed to save over Rs. 41,000 crore over an eight-year period, and finally, the farmers of the country have earned more than Rs. 40,000 crore, during the last 8 years.

Ethanol blending is the process of blending ethyl alcohol, which is at least 99 per cent pure and is derived from agricultural products, exclusively with petrol. Apart from reduced carbon emissions, this can also help increase energy security, self-reliance, better use of damaged food grains, increased farmers' incomes, and greater investment opportunities.

Additionally, the PM announced that India has also achieved its commitment to reach 40 per cent of installed electric capacity from non-fossil-fuel based sources. In fact, this target was achieved 9 years ahead of schedule. Prime Minister Modi also informed the audience at the event that today the country's solar energy capacity has increased by about 18 times.
