India-Bound VW Tiguan Scores 5 Star Rating in Euro NCAP Crash Test

The new VW Tiguan SUV scored the top rating in the Euro NCAP crash test, scoring five stars aggregated from results in four sub-sections. Volkswagen first showcased the Tiguan SUV at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. Though Volkswagen Tiguan's India launch is scheduled for 2017, the SUV made an appearance here earlier this year at the 2016 Auto Expo.

New Volkswagen Tiguan Rear Quarter (Volkswagen Tiguan scored 84 per cent for child safety)

The latest generation of Volkswagen's 7-seater premium SUV achieved 96 per cent of the maximum rating in the testing of occupant safety for adults and 84 per cent for child safety. Here are the details of the Tiguan Euro NCAP crash test score:

a. Occupant safety for adults - 96%

b. Child Safety - 84%

c. Pedestrian Protection - 72%

d. Safety Assistance - 69%

For the aforementioned assessment, the VW Tiguan was put through the following safety tests:

a. Frontal crash into an aluminium barrier at 64Km/h and 40 per cent overlap

b. Frontal crash at 50Km/h into a rigid barrier with 100 per cent overlap

c. Side impact at 50Km/h into the vehicle side structure

d. Side pole impact at 32Km/h

e. Protection against whiplash in the event of a rear-end collision

f. Automatic emergency braking to avoid collisions with vehicles or pedestrians

The second-generation VW Tiguan comes loaded with an extensive array of safety features including airbags for the driver and front-seat passenger, a head airbag system for the front and rear passengers, side airbags, safety-optimised headrests, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with countersteer assistance, ABS with brake assistant, Post- Collision Braking System, etc.. Volkswagen says Tiguan also features several design details that aid safety. The SUV sports 'active bonnet', which in the event of a collision is designed to help reduce dangerous head injuries to passers-by.

About the car's arrival here - VW will locally produce the Tiguan in India, where it will go on sale in 2017. The upcoming VW SUV will rival names such as the Ford Endeavour, new Toyota Fortuner, and Chevrolet Trailblazer.
