Hyundai Kona Electric: How Does It Get Charged

The Hyundai Kona Electric was recently launched in India at a price of Rs. 25.3 lakh (ex-showroom, India) and it happens to be India's first ever fully electric SUV. The company will be launching the Kona in 15 dealerships and 11 cities across the country. Yes! It is a modern, good-looking crossover, which is not only electric but offers a host of features as well. The Kona Electric gets a 100 kW motor which pumps out the equivalent of 131 bhp and 395 Nm of peak torque. The motor is paired to a single-speed reduction gear and Hyundai claims that the Kona Electric can do the 0-100 kmph sprint in 9.7 seconds.

Its other major benefit is the low cost of ownership. In fact, Hyundai was keen to point out that the cost of running the Kona Electric is less than Re. 1 per km and the cost of ownership is about one-fifth of the Hyundai Creta petrol! The 39.2 kWh lithium ion battery on the Kona has an ARAI certified range of 452 kilometres on a single charge. But, what happens when the car runs out of charge?

Given the fact that EV charging facilities in India are almost negligible, Hyundai Motor India has come up with a solution. The company has partnered with Indian Oil Corporation and the company will be setting up fast chargers at select IOCL retail outlets in cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai. These 50 kW DC quick chargers can charge the Kona EV from fully discharged to 80 per cent in less than an hour and takes less than three hours to fully charge the car.

(The wall box charger can charge the car fully in less than 7 hours)

With every purchase of the Kona Electric, Hyundai will also provide the customer with a 7.2 kW AC wall box charger that can charge the car fully in 6 hours 10 minutes. It can be installed either at home or office. If the customer wants, Hyundai can provide an extra wall charger as well. The cost of the wall charger will be somewhere between Rs. 70,000 to Rs. 1 lakh. The AC wall box charger can top up the charge in the vehicle for a range of 50 kilometres in just one hour.

Finally, each Hyundai Kona Electric also gets a 2.8 kW portable charger, which can be directly plugged into your regular 15 ampere socket and it will take about 19 hours to fully charge the car after it is fully discharged. This charger can top up daily running of 50Kms in less than 3 hours.
