- Reportedly plant workers had staged a sit-in protest over COVID scare
Hyundai Motor India is reportedly suspending operations at its manufacturing facility near Chennai, Tamil Nadu, after a face-off between the workers and the management on Monday, May 24, 2021. The plant workers had staged a brief, sit-in protest voicing their concerns about rising COVID-19 infections in the state, especially among workers. To that effect, the South Korean car manufacturer has decided to temporarily shut plant operations at the Chennai facility for five days, effective from today, May 25, 2021, till May 29, 2021.

Hyundai is not the only car manufacturer to face temporary factory closures in India due to growing unrest among workers concerned about rising COVID-19 infections. Earlier this week, workers at Renault-Nissan's car plant, also located in Tamil Nadu, in Oragadam near Chennai, said they will go on strike on Wednesday because their COVID-related safety demands have not been met. The strike threat at the Renault-Nissan plant came ahead of a court hearing over allegations from workers that social distancing norms were being disregard and factory health policies did not sufficiently address the risk to lives.
