Other than the cost, the second most important factor considered while purchasing a car is its fuel-efficiency. And rightly so, considering how expensive fuel is. Here's a list of things to keep in mind to ensure your car delivers the best mileage it can:

    1. Avoid taking the car out separately just for small chores - try to run all errands in one trip.

    2. Ditch rush-hour traffic. Stop - start traffic needs first gear, which, in turn, needs a huge amount of fuel to get moving again.

    3. If you find yourself stuck in traffic, try to travel at a slow pace instead of accelerating and braking.

    4. Roll-up your windows - at least on the highway. A car's mileage doesn't take much of a hit in the city, but you one must avoid leaving the windows and sunroof open on the highway. The drag caused by the wind makes the car more expensive to run. Use the air vents, and the A/C instead.

    5. Much like leaving the windows open, a roof rack also leads to extra wind resistance - only its affect is much worse. Just so you know, even an empty rack increases drag and causes the car to use more mileage.

    6. Eliminate unncessary weight since more weight means usage of more fuel.

    7. Accelerate smoothly and maintain a speed.

    8. Though completely avoiding overtaking is unrealistic, refrain from indulging the urge wherever you can.

    9. Accelerating to avoid changing into a lower gear leads to the consumption of more fuel not less.

    10. Check the tyre pressure, for an under-inflated tyre causes the car to use more fuel.

    11. Regular maintenance helps the car deliver the best fuel economy.

Fact Check: The engine of a car that has been parked for a few hours is cold and thus, uses more fuel for the first 10Kms.
