Honda is keen on building its 'EV' credentials, following in the footsteps of Bajaj Auto, TVS and Hero MotoCorp, who has an electric scooter ready to be launched and has significant investment in Ather Energy. Reports suggest that HMSI has filed multiple patents in India in the last few months, which are related to electric vehicles and EV technology in general. In the recent past, the company also filed a variety of patents for removable battery packs, charging infrastructure, cooling systems and so on. A few months ago, we reported on Honda filing patents for the PCX electric scooter, which was in fact, showcased, at the 2018 Auto Expo as well.

Patents show that the scooter comes with a 4.2 kW motor and a removable 50.4 V lithium ion battery pack. And the battery can be charged without removing it as well, through a charging cable, but being removable just offers the added convenience. The Honda PCX offered in global markets, come with an internal combustion engine hybrid, as well as full-electric powertrains. In India though, reports suggest that the PCX electric is the one being patented. Rumour mills also suggest that Honda has filed patents for an electric motorcycle, which resembles the Honda CB300R.

Of course, filing a patent doesn't necessarily mean the product/technology is being considered for launch. Plus, the other important thing to highlight here is the fact that most of the patents have been registered by either Honda Motor Co. or Honda R&D Co. instead of Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI). One of the reasons could be to protect intellectual property related to new products and technology.
