Going driving on the highway? Here are some things that you should not neglect at all:

  • Proper Speed- Speed is a crucial aspect with regard to driving on the highways. Maintaining suitable highway speeds is always easier since traffic is lighter and the roads are wider by nature. Stick to speed limits wherever they are present and also set your speed based on the conditions of the roads.
  • Changing Lanes- Changing lanes property is very essential. It is crucial when driving on the highways since vehicles usually journey at higher speeds. Make sure that you are not driving in the wrong lane by any chance. The fast lane is only for overtaking but not for driving. Always give the right signal during lane-changing.
  • Maintaining Distance- Make sure that there is sizable distance between the vehicle in front and your car. This will give you ample breathing space for slowing down and avoiding any collisions or other mishaps. Look for a signboard or a bridge as your landmark, check the time required by you to reach there after the front car passes this landmark. This should be at least three seconds and a longer duration is also recommended at night, during rain, or in foggy weather.
  • Indication or Signaling- You should always use your indicators while changing lanes. If you see any obstruction or warning which will require sudden brake usage, immediately turn on the hazard lights and slow down. Indicate again after re-joining the road once you take a break.
  • Overtaking Manners- You should always emphasize on proper timing and judgment before overtaking. Judge the car speed right in front and check for vehicles in the next lane. You should build up gap between the vehicle that you overtook and switch back thereafter.
  • Keep checking your mirrors- You should consistently keep checking your car mirrors. Glancing regularly will help you while changing lanes or overtaking. Check for blind spots or get blind-spot mirrors installed instead.
  • Driving at night- Avoid this if you can. If you must travel at night, ensure that the lights are functional and adjust headlights accordingly. Do not set them higher since they may dazzle other drivers.

Be careful in case of wet roads or rainfall out on the highway. Lower your speed, try and bypass wet stretches and other puddles, and do not brake excessively hard. Make sure other vehicles can see you, by keeping your lights turned on.
