Hero MotoCorp's impressive run has come courtesy of its new range of scooters - the Maestro Edge and Duet, launched late last year. Both scooters developed completely by Hero MotoCorp managed to strike a chord with the audience and have been quick to rise on the sales chart. In February 2016, Hero sold 42,851 units of the Maestro Edge alone, followed by 31,456 units of the new Duet scooter. The old Hero Pleasure too, raked in 13,849 units, taking the company's cumulative scooter sales to 88,156 units for the month.
TVS, on the other hand, sold 47,712 units of the Jupiter, the company's best selling scooter and the second best selling scooter in the country. The other TVS products though could not create similar kind of demand with the Wego clocking 5268 units, the Scooty Zest achieving 5878 units and the Scooty Pep+ garnering 5957 units.
Clearly, Hero's homegrown scooters will be playing a pivotal role in the company's growth plans over the next financial year as well. The growth in scooter sales has also helped increase Hero's market share which currently rests at 16 per cent, when compared to TVS' 15.5 per cent. The Indian bike maker currently has a production capacity of 1 lakh units for scooters, but given the impressive demand, the company is expected to expand production further.
That said, TVS won't be giving up any time soon. The Hosur based manufacturer has been concentrating on its motorcycle range of late and the company is sure to bounce back in the scooter space with more exciting products. However, things will get really interesting if Hero is able to penetrate into Honda's number one position with its set of offerings. The exponentially growing scooter segment definitely has a lot in store.
