Hero Leap - First Made-in-India Electric Hybrid Scooter
Highlights
Hero's first ever hybrid scooter, the Leap, which was first showcased at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo, is now all set to go on sale early next year.
Leap - that first debuted as a concept at the 2012 Auto Expo - will be produced at Hero MotoCorp's Gurgaon based facility. It will initially produce 6,000 units/annually, which might grow later, depending on the reponse this hybrid scooter receives.
The Leap has been designed keeping in mind Hero's global markets. It is powered by lithium-ion batteries and an 11bhp traction motor. It houses an all new 124cc engine to eliminate the limited range of electric vehicles usually provide. It also gets a 3-litre fuel tank, to allow the vehicle to operate on petrol in case a rider doesn't have access to a plugging outlet to recharge the battery.
The company claims that the Leap's permanent magnet AC (PMAC) traction motor helps it churn out a maximum torque of 60Nm, that is available from standstill. The top-speed of the Leap is 100Km/h while running with the range extender.
