Harley-Davidson Recalls 27,232 Models For Addressing Clutch Issues
Highlights
- The clutch master cylinder is said to be faulty
- This is the third time H-D is issuing a recall for clutch problems
- Harley-Davidson will carry out the repairs free of cost
Yet another manufacturer has issued a recall for its models and this time, it is the iconic American motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has said that the clutch master cylinder in affected motorcycles may not have enough ability to generate lift which is needed to disengage the clutch, all the more if the motorcycle has been parked for a long periods of time. In case the clutch does not disengage fully when needed, there are chances that a crash might occur. One of the symptoms is a lot of free play in the clutch lever when it is first squeezed after spending an extended period while parked.
There is no word on whether the clutch master cylinder issue has led to any injuries or damages to the motorcycles. From what we hear, Harley-Davidson will be contacting the owners of the affected models and will check the clutch master cylinder for any inconsistencies and so on. The company will carry out all the repairs necessary pertaining to the issue, free of cost.
The models affected by this issue are the 2016 editions of the Electra Glide Ultra Classic, Electra Glide Ultra Classic Low, Ultra Limited, Ultra Limited Low, Street Glide, CVO Street Glide, Road Glide Special, Road Glide, Street Glide Special, Police Electra Glide, Road Glide Ultra, Softail Slim S, CVO Softail Pro Street Breakout and lastly, the Fat Boy Special. In total, there are 27,232 models that have been affected. At the moment, the recall has been issued only for motorcycles sold in USA. We will update you if there are other countries in which the H-D models have been recalled. There have been two previous instances where the manufacturer had to recall its motorcycles due to a clutch issue. The first recall was initiated in October 2013 where 25,183 units were recalled and the second recall was initiated in 2015 where over 46,000 models were recalled. Also, with respect to the second recall, there were 27 crashes that were reported and 4 instances of minor injuries sustained.
