Formula E: Lucas di Grassi Wins Puebla E-Prix As Wehrlein Was Disqualified
Highlights
- Lucas di Grassi secured his third Formula E win in Mexico
- Mahindra Racing's Alexander Sims finished 4th, Alex Lynn claimed 10th
- Robin Frijns leads the points standings followed Antonio da Costa
Pascal Wehrlein and Porsche were denied their first win in Formula E at the first-ever Puebla E-Prix in Mexico. The driver was disqualified soon after crossing the chequered flag. This led to the second-placed Lucas di Grassi taking the win over Audi teammate Rene Rast. Meanwhile, Venturi's Edoardo Mortara was promoted to the podium while Mahindra Racing Alexander Sims finished fourth. Wehrlein started the race in pole position and held the top spot till the end leading with a gap of 3.6s. However, soon after crossing the finish line, the driver was sent to the bottom of the timing screen.
The disqualification was announced as a result of the team not declaring the tyres on Wehrlein's car, denying the team its maiden win. This led to Di Grassi bagging its first win since Berlin in 2019 after 22 races. Meanwhile, Rast's second-place finish made for a third 1-2 finish for Audi in Formula E and his first podium of the season. While Di Grassi's win was a result of an error on Porsche's part, the driver did have an impressive run starting eighth on the grid.
Coming in fourth was Alexander Sims surviving a collision with Vergne, and lack of practice following a suspected battery glitch. His Mahindra Racing teammate Alex Lynn wasn't as lucky though and collided with Sam Bird early on in the race but managed to finish 10th picking up a crucial point for the team.
BMW's Jake Dennis bagged fifth followed by Techeetah's Antonio Felix da Costa, who now sits second in the drivers' standings in the championship. Meanwhile, leader Robin Frijns finished 17th in the race failing to extend his lead.
Coming in seventh was Mercedes' Stoffel Vandoorne who had an impressive run after starting 21st, while Jaguar's Mitch Evans claimed P8 ahead of Nyck de Vries in the second Mercedes car. Oliver Turvey of NIO finished 11th followed by Andretti's Maximilian Gunther, Tom Blomqvist of NIO, and Norman Nato of Venturi.
