Ford's 1.0-Litre EcoBoost Engine Is a Winner at IEOTY Again

- The 1.0-litre EcoBoost won the overall best engine from 2012-14
- In total, this is the 9th award at IEOTY for the 1.0-litre EcoBoost unit
- The technology is now being used in Ford's EcoBlue diesel engines
Little did Ford know that its 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine will be the benchmark for small engine world over and that too for 5 straight years. Yet again, the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine has won the best engine under 1.0-litre category. It has been winning the award ever since it was launched internationally in 2012. This year, the EcoBoost was ranked the best amongst 32 competitors in the category, which is 19 competitors more than in 2012, when it won the award first. Also, the year of 2015 saw significant increase in the number of small turbocharged engines with fuel injection from various other manufacturers globally. In 2014, the EcoBoost was the first ever engine to have been judged the overall best engine of the year for third time in a row.
A panel of 65 automotive journalists from 31 countries voted it to be best in class with an unsurpassable combination of great drivability, performance, economy, refinement and technology that continues to set the standard. At present, the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine is available in 100PS, 125PS, 140PS and even 180PS in the Ford Fiesta R2 Rally car. The EcoBoost engine gets fitted in a variety of Ford cars in 72 countries.
"The 1.0-litre EcoBoost was a game-changer, and despite others following our lead, it remains the undisputed benchmark in its class five years on," said Joe Bakaj, vice president, Product Development, Ford of Europe. "The spirit of innovation continues to drive us as we look to use the same smart thinking for a new breed of efficient, clean and powerful down-sized diesel engines."
In its 140PS avatar, the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine delivers more power-to-litre ratio than a Bugatti Veyron. Now that's something. Also, Ford fitted a road-legal 205PS version on a Formula car, which was able to lap the Nurburgring in 7 minutes and 22 seconds, comfortably breaking the 8-minute barrier and showing better performance than some of the 600PS+ supercars as well. The technology is now also being put to use in Ford's latest 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine. The engine utilises a low-inertia turbocharger, high pressure fuel injection, integrated manifolds and other such low friction elements to deliver a 13 per cent increase in fuel efficiency and 20 per cent more low-end torque.
