Ford to Move Out of Japan, Indonesia; Will Cease Operations This Year
Highlights
Reportedly Ford Motor Company has decided to move out of Japan and Indonesia this year. The carmakers will be ceasing all operations in both the markets by end of 2016. Apparently Ford claims that it sees "no reasonable path to profitability" in these two Asian car markets, according to an internal document reviewed by Reuters on Monday.
Also according to an email from Ford Asia Pacific President, Dave Schoch, to all employees in the region, Ford has announced that it will exit all areas of business in the aforementioned markets. This includes shuttering dealerships and stopping sales and imports of Ford and Lincoln vehicles. As for product development that is currently done in Japan, Ford will be shifting it elsewhere. A company spokeswoman confirmed that an email regarding the decision was sent to employees on Monday.
In Japan Ford currently sells six models, which include the Ford Fiesta hatchback, Ford Focus, Ford EcoSport compact SUV, Ford Kuga SUV, Ford Explorer SUV and even the iconic Ford Mustang muscle car that signifies the American carmaker. On the other hand in Indonesia, Ford currently offers the same Fiesta, Focus and EcoSport in the sub-compact segment, whereas the SUV segment only offers the new Everest (Endeavour) along with the new Ford Ranger pick-up truck.
