Highlights

  • Ford plans to produce only 15,000 cars in 2022
  • By 2025, it wants to making 160,000 cars for its gen 2 model
  • Likely dealers are going to inflate the price of the car

Ford is planning to double the production for the F-150 Lightning which was unveiled a month ago and will go on sale next year. This speaks volumes of the demand Ford is looking at as that's also seemingly not enough. Ford has already racked up 120,000 customer reservations ahead of its spring 2022 release. Ford has a plan to ramp up to 15,000 vehicles in 2022, 55,000 in 2023 and 80,000 in 2024. Finally, it is targeting 160,000 vehicles in 2025 with the second-generation Lightning which will be based on the upcoming Ford TE1 platform. The current Lightning uses the F-150 platform. To achieve this, Ford will be investing an additional $850 million apart from the $30 billion it will already spend by 2025.

This is not the first time Ford is increasing production of the F-150 Lighting as this before last November when it announced its plan of adding 350 more jobs and increase production by over 50 per cent. Now, Ford plans on producing three times more F-150 Lightning cars as it originally envisioned showing the potential in the EV space. The gasoline-powered F-150 is the most popular pickup truck in the US, so this was bound to happen considering it sells around about a million of them every year.

The electric pickup truck is turning out to be a revelation

The F-150 Lightning has been launched to impressive first impressions where even President Joe Biden has endorsed it. Ford is also planning to make an electric version of its Bronco SUV which will further drive home this narrative.

The limited production plan for the F-150 Lightning initially will almost certainly mean that the prices are going to be high for early adopters. This has already been witnessed in the early sales of the Mustang Mach-E which is the first EV Ford has created. Considering the titanic demand and just a limited run of 15,000 cars in the first year, Ford's dealers are almost certainly going to upsell this car.
