  • Red Bull instead hired Sergio Perez who won the last race at Baku
  • Vettel's shift to Aston Martin had left the Mexican without a drive

Sebastian Vettel has revealed that a shift to Red Bull was never on the cards for him after it was announced that he would be leaving Ferrari at the end of the 2020 season. He revealed this when he was quizzed alongside Sergio Perez in the French GP press conference. He was asked if he regretted not going back to Red Bull, the team with which he won his 4 world titles considering Perez was the man he replaced at Aston Martin. "No I don't regret [not returning to Red Bull] and I don't think it was an option," Vettel revealed at the press conference. Obviously, I decided to go in a new direction and join a new team with Aston Martin on a new journey and I'm very happy about that," he added.

Vettel also showed adulation for Perez who was left without a seat for 2021 when it was announced that the German would be replacing him at Racing Point. It was only at the end of the season on the back of monstrous performances Perez scored a one-year deal with Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen.

A rejuvenated Vettel has been the driver of the day in the last two races

And in Baku, Perez showed his skill as he won the race when Verstappen crashed out, holding out a charge by both Lewis Hamilton and Vettel, world champions with 11-titles between them.

"And in all honesty, and this I really mean from the heart, I'm very happy that Checo got a great seat because he deserves it. He's shown it not just with a win but he's shown it with the last 10 years or something like that, that he's been in Formula 1, and he deserves to be in a great car," Vettel said in full praise of the tenacious Mexican.

Vettel was also happy for his former team. "I'm happy that Red Bull have a great car for two reasons: one, I obviously know a big part of the team, but obviously for Checo that he gets to enjoy the fact that you go to a race and you know that you have a car that you can fight for the win with," he added.
