F1 managing director Ross Brawn feels the Sebastian Vettel of old is back in the Aston Martin AMR21. After being dropped from Ferrari at the end of the 2020 season there was a feeling that the former 4-time world champion was past his prime.
"With his current demeanour, performance and approach, I can't help but feel we have the old Sebastian back," the F1 managing director wrote in his post-race review.
"So it's disappointing for him and the team that he was disqualified for failing to have enough fuel to supply a sample. While the loss of points is frustrating, he can take heart from his performances of late," he added.
Aston Martin swooped in and signed him despite having a long term contract with Sergio Perez. Luckily Perez found a seat at Red Bull and Vettel replaced him as the lead driver at the Silverstone based outfit.
After a tough time during pre-season testing and a horrid first few races, the former world champion started turning it on with an awesome P5 in Monaco and a valiant P2 in Baku. He turned in another great performance at Hungary for P2, but unfortunately for disqualified as his car didn't have enough fuel something which Aston Martin has protested.
"I have to put my hands up and say I had my doubts when he went to Aston Martin, as the end of Ferrari career was pretty disappointing for everyone - but he has had a new lease of life," said Brawn hinting at that what most people in the paddock had started to feel given his numerous unforced errors at fag end of his Ferrari stint.
"He was very close to taking that victory. It's great to see him performing like that. He made no mistakes and pushed Esteban hard. That little problem in the pit stop might have been a factor in not getting past Esteban or at the very least would have made it a closer fight when his rival exited the pits. Sebastian is born again. He'll be hoping for a better ultimate result next time around," Brawn proclaimed.
