F1: Rosberg Takes Pole at British Grand Prix While Hamilton Starts in 6th Place
Highlights
It was Nico Rosberg who took pole position for the British Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton failed to deliver in qualifying on home turf. The weather changed during the hour-long qualifying session and Q3 saw drivers opt for slick tyres but losing a lot of time in the final sector as light rain fell.
Hamilton set a lap which put him on provisional pole as everyone attempted one final run late on, but appeared to back off in the opening sector with conditions still far from ideal. However, the final sector was much improved and those who finished a lap were rewarded. So, it was Rosberg who took pole with a 1:35.766, leaving him 1.6s clear of Sebastian Vettel who had been over two seconds down on Hamilton's original time after two sectors. Jenson Button was the top home driver in third place, although it was 2.5s clear of Rosberg's time.
Q1 saw Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen, Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa dropping out but the biggest shock was that both Marussia cars progressed.
Nico Hulkenberg will start from fourth ahead of Kevin Magnussen and Hamilton, while Sergio Perez, Daniel Ricciardo, Daniil Kvyat and Jean-Eric Vergne rounded out the top ten.
It's an interesting line-up at the start of the grid and both Button and Vettel will want to make good use of this advantage. However, though Hamilton starts from 6th place, there is no counting him out of the race as we all know how quick both the Mercedes cars are.
