F1: Nico Rosberg Wins European Grand Prix
Rosberg won by 16.6 seconds ahead Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel while Sergio Perez passed Kimi Raikkonen on the penultimate lap to take up the last place on the podium. Raikkonen would have eventually slotted in fourth anyway thanks to the 5 second penalty for a pit entry violation, but he still managed to steer clear of rival Lewis Hamilton who slotted in at 5th place.
Highlights
There were a lot of speculations about the European Grand Prix this weekend, primarily because of the trickiness of the track. Though the long straights saw drivers speed up to 340 km/h, the narrow street circuit was technically demanding. The first victim to the dreaded turn 11 was Lewis Hamilton during qualifying yesterday and that was probably the start of what turned out to be the perfect weekend for his team mate Nico Rosberg.
Rosberg won by 16.6 seconds ahead Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel while Sergio Perez passed Kimi Raikkonen on the penultimate lap to take up the last place on the podium. Rosberg led from the front and looked calm and composed throughout the race. Raikkonen, however, lost his cool in the closing laps and his rant at the team engineer over the radio was proof enough. He eventually slotted in fourth anyway thanks to the 5 second penalty for a pit entry violation, but he still managed to steer clear of rival Lewis Hamilton who slotted in at 5th place.
Hamilton made up several places after starting tenth on the grid but a problem with the Mercedes hybrid power system saw him struggling with the settings on the car. He even tried coaxing it out of his team engineer, but the F1 rules clearly didn't allow this as the drivers are on their own on the circuit. Williams got into the points tally with Bottas running a good race in sixth place but it was the battle for 7th that really had everyone glued to their TV sets. Red Bull Racing driver Daniel Ricciardo weaved past Nico Hulkenberg in the closing stages of the race while team mate Max Verstrappen managed to overtake both Massa and Hulkenberg to secure eight place.
Force India was back into the points tally with Hulkenberg in 9th and Massa in 10th. It was another disappointing race for both McLaren-Honda drivers as Alonso retired in the final stages of the race with a gearbox issue, while Jenson Button managed to slot in 11th.
With this win Rosberg now has a lead of 24 points over Hamilton and he will look to extend this lead in the races to come.
