Highlights

- In the wake of the black lives matter, in 2020 shifted to a black livery.
- George Russell will join Lewis Hamilton in a silver Mercedes.
In the wake of the black lives matters movement and Lewis Hamilton's endeavours towards diversity, the Mercedes team in 2020 shifted to a black livery, dumping their iconic silver livery which gives them the silver arrows nickname. But in 2022, that's set to change as it has been decided that the team will revert to its iconic livery in 2022 as it tries to defend its world constructor's champion crown. This means when George Russell joins Lewis Hamilton, he will be in a silver Mercedes. Last year, Hamilton also said that it would be alright to go back to the original livery.
"It's originally a silver arrows, When I asked if we could go to make the car black last year, in terms of the symbolism, and what we intend to do moving forward in terms of support, I wasn't expecting it to last particularly long and we carried it into a second season, which was awesome. If it goes back, it will be a nice change. It doesn't deter us from the changes we are making internally as we continue to truly push for diversity, even working with all of our partners. We've got a good programme going, so it doesn't make a difference," said Hamilton earlier this year.
Reportedly, this change had been decided at the 2021 season finale in Abu Dhabi which also hosted Daimler boss Ola Kallenious before the race. Hamilton for his part launched Mission 44 to empower underrepresented groups in the UK, while the Hamilton Commission published findings that could improve diversity in motorsport.
Mercedes won 5 of its 8 constructor's in the silver livery with Hamilton winning 5 of his 6 titles with Mercedes in the same colour as well.
