After facing some difficulties with its power unit in 2021, Mercedes is said to be readying a new engine that will make some performance gains thanks to a new turbocharger and also is said to be addressing the reliability aspect of things. McLaren which returned to Mercedes power in 2021 was one of its happy customers is shedding some light on what's in store for 2022.
"They're feeling good about their development. We, fortunately, had good reliability last year. As you know, there's more than just the power unit that goes into the reliability," said Zak Brown, the CEO of McLaren motor sporting entity.
He believed that Mercedes and McLaren worked well together which was reflected in the fact that his team was the highest-ranked customer team for Mercedes in P4.
"I think our guys did a good job of working with the power unit in year one, so reliability hasn't been maybe the same level of concern with us that it has with others," Brown added.
McLaren which was neck and neck with Ferrari till the last quarter of the season will need a good power unit in 2022 as it had a major power advantage over the legendary Italian team for the large part of the season. But Ferrari is said to be developing a new powertrain that according to reports will be on par with what Mercedes has if not better which will give headaches to the entire grid.
