Highlights

  • There are many minor sounds that often emanate from our cars
  • They broadly fall into the category of engine noise
  • Here are some of them and what they could mean

The definition of engine noise, as succinctly stated by Enda Murphy and Eoin A. King in the 2014 Environmental Noise Pollution is the following- Engine noise significantly results from the mechanical procedures needed for driving a vehicle and moving it forward. They broadly categorize the term as covering engine vibrations and noise, transmission noise and noise from the exhaust, cooling systems, and fans. It is also known as power unit noise in some cases.

Here are some noises that you should definitely watch out for:

Squealing Sound

Sometimes there could be a slight squeal that you hear under the hood of the car upon starting. This may result from the worn-out serpentine belt as it is known. This is what drives the functioning of outer parts like the water pump, power steering pump, alternator, etc. The belt should be instantly replaced since it is a vital component of the car.

Rumbling Note

This may come from the exhaust at times. It may result from an exhaust muffler leak. The roaring sound is the engine noise that is silenced by the muffler in normal scenarios. With the leak increasing, the noise will also go up. This means that you are directly putting carbon monoxide into the surrounding atmosphere as well. Get this fixed instantly.

Squealing sound while turning the vehicle

If you are turning the steering wheel and hear this noise, then you need more fluid for the power steering. Open up the car hood and check the fluid level for the power steering.

Yawning Note while turning the car

There could be a groan or yawning sound while turning the car. This is a really big issue and it should be fixed early in order to prevent loss of control over the steering wheel.

Knocking sound

The knocking sound in engines may happen due to incomplete fuel combustion. It is a common issue and causes may be diverse. The commonest one is the usage of poor quality fuel.

Popping note

This engine sound is due to a lack of service. It is a common noise heard due to the clogging up of the fuel filter as well. A poor spark plug may also cause this sound at the same time. The car may also make these sounds if engine oil is really low.
