The big daddy of adventure-touring bikes - the BMW R1200 GS - has been updated for 2017, now meeting Euro4 regulations and some additional electronics. The 2017 bike is available in Rallye and Exclusive packages, the difference being in different colour and protections pieces.

The boxer engine continues with the same 125bhp at 7,750rpm but gets some mechanical upgrades to meet Euro4 regulations - the addition of a judder damper on the transmission output shaft, and reworked transmission shafts.

The upgrades to the engine have meant a slightly heavier bike than the outgoing model. So, the big GS now weighs 244kg, a jump of around 6kg on the outgoing model. While the GS may not have afforded to get heavier, the Euro4 regulations are forcing manufacturers to beef up the catalytic converters, and upgrade few other pieces, adding to the weight.

Updated electronics include an optional Riding Modes Pro function offering Dynamic, Dynamic Pro, Enduro and Enduro Pro riding modes. Each mode incorporates lean angle-sensitive dynamic traction control, new Hill Start Control and ABS Pro. The standard package offers just Rain and Road riding modes and features BMW's basic Automatic Stability Control traction control system.

The bike also features BMW's next generation electronic suspension, which automatically adapts damping according to the terrain, and also has a self-levelling function from automatic spring pre-load adjustments. The Rallye package gets spoked wheels and also adds a Rallye seat which helps the rider move around in off-road riding. The Exclusive package gets cast wheels, as well as BMW's standard windscreen and seat.
