Driving on slippery roads can be pretty dangerous, and you need to follow these tips to stay safe when driving in the winter. Get your car serviced and ensure that it is in perfect working condition.

Maintenance

Ensure that your car's windshield wipers, headlights, and taillights are in proper working condition. It would be best if you top up your windshield wiper fluid and wait for your car to warm up before you start driving. Ensure that your batteries are in perfect condition because the winter season can affect the performance of your car's batteries. 

Driving Smoothly

It would be best if you were smooth with your brakes, accelerator, wheel, and steering in the winter. Every move must be deliberate, gradual, and gentle. Just imagine holding a cup of coffee while driving and keeping cautious so that you don't spill it. 

Looking Ahead

You should try and look farther and think ahead during the winter season. Think about the next turn and anticipate your next move. While turning, you should slow down and keep a safe distance from other cars. Drive with extra caution, safely, and concentrate on the road. 

Tyres

The roads become very slippery and wet during winters. The type of tyres you use can become a crucial factor. Opt for winter tires for optimum performance instead of using summer tyres or all-season tyres. Other tyres will not have enough grip for winter roads. 

Accelerating and Braking

The Anti-Lock Brake System or ABS can be a lifesaver in the winter season. The ABS helps when the car skids as they engage proper brakes. Remember to maintain at least ten feet distance from other cars during the winter season. 

If your car is of an older version and does not have ABS, turn the steering towards the skidding direction without braking. You will regain control of your car and be safe again.

Vision

During the winter, there is a lot of fog and possibly snow. This might result in reduced visibility. Keep your taillights and headlights on while you drive at all times. This way, you can see better, and even the other drivers can spot you on the road. This will help in avoiding accidents and keeping you safe. Also, keep a fair distance from other cars while driving.

Traction

While driving in the snow, the tyre grip and traction are highly essential. Bad tyre grip and low traction are pretty common during the winter. Maintain the traction by not driving fast and being responsible. Do not use your brake while turning your car and instead decelerate. Lightly push the brake once you have turned and then push the accelerator once again.
