Delhi Government Withdraws Subsidies On Electric Cars
Highlights
- Delhi government has withdrawn the Rs. 1.5 lakh subsidy on electric cars.
- Subsidies on e2-wheelers and last mile connectivity EVs will continue.
- The Delhi EV forum will continue developing the charging infrastructure.
In a very surprising move, Delhi government has withdrawn the Rs. 1.5 lakh subsidy on electric cars in Delhi after the first 1,000 units were sold and there are no plans to further extend the scheme. The decision comes at a time when Delhi was inching closer to becoming one of the highest EV selling states. According to official figures, EVs accounted for 7 per cent of the total number of vehicles registered with the Delhi government's transport department in Q2 FY2022, while CNG vehicles accounted for 6 per cent. Over 1.5 lakh vehicles were registered in Delhi out of which 7,869 were EVs, 6,857 were CNG vehicles and 7,257 vehicles could be switched to both CNG and petrol.

Now, subsidies definitely help in pacing up EV adoption which has been the need of the hour, especially during the winter season when the city's air quality remains hazardous or very poor for most of the days, primarily due to stubble burning. And of course, the idea has been to control any other form of pollution, even if by the slightest of margin. The Delhi government had announced its EV policy just last year and after that we have seen an uptick in EV sales in the national capital. A dedicated EV Forum has been set up as well to work on creating a sustainable ecosystem for green vehicles.

Having said that, the state government will continue offering other benefits like road tax and registration charge waiver, and the Rs. 30,000 subsidy on electric two-wheelers, commercial electric vehicles and last mile connectivity solutions such as e-rickshaws will remain in place. The EV forum will also continue developing a robust charging infrastructure in the city and the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has already announced setting up 50 new electric charging stations in the city over the next six months. Even Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) will setup 10,000 charging stations across the country in the next three years and few of those will be installed in the Delhi-NCR region as well.
