General Motors today announced that it will no longer proceed with the launch of Chevrolet Spin MPV in India in 2017. In the official statement released by the company, Chevrolet said that it is responding to changing trends and customer demand in India and is working on a new soft-roader instead. The new model will be based on the Beat Activ Concept that was showcased earlier this year at the 2016 Auto Expo. Cancelling a production-ready model like the Spin MPV is really a big step for the company, which believes it is time to focus on growing segments including SUVs.

Confirming that the all-new Chevrolet Beat Activ soft-roader will go into production, GM India President and Managing Director, Kaher Kazem said, "There was an overwhelming response from our Indian stakeholders to the Beat Activ when we revealed it at the Auto Expo in Delhi. As a soft-roader, the vehicle is ready for any adventure or challenge, while its interior ensures the driver remains comfortable and connected."

With this announcement, Chevrolet's upcoming models for next year include - New Beat hatchback, Beat-based sub-compact sedan Essentia, and now the Beat Activ soft-roader as well. We also have the TrailBlazer facelift which is expected to be launched in India soon and is currently undergoing homologation. Commenting on the new product timeline Kazem said, "These new Chevrolet vehicles clearly demonstrate we are listening to our customers and are being led by their desire for small cars with more content and choice. They were distinctly developed for the Indian market. However, there is no doubt they will have global appeal."

Kazem also added that Chevrolet is keen on proving its Indian customers the safe, high-quality vehicles that they deserve. "We have a strong plan to launch at least five new Chevrolet models within the space of 24 months, including the new Trailblazer, new Beat, Essentia, new Cruze and Beat Activ," he said.

As mentioned in our earlier reports, Chevrolet is currently focusing majorly on exports and is planning to launch a new model only in 2017. The company has reported that in 2015 alone it exported 21,000 Chevrolet vehicles to 40 countries, including Chile and Mexico. This year, GM expects significant growth in exports, with an additional 50,000 units.
