In an attempt to help Chennai recover after the devastating floods, and get back on its feet, Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) today handed over a Rs. 2-crore cheque to the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund (CMPRF). This act also makes Hyundai the first carmaker in the country to extend its support to the fund.

Hyundai established itself in the state of Tamil Nadu in 1996 and has been enjoying a successful run since then in the Indian market. This act looks like an act of solidarity and respect for the state that has helped Hyundai reach the number two spot in the Indian automobile industry.

The floods created havoc in the Indian automobile industry as many carmakers and two-wheeler manufacturers were forced to suspend their operations. The list of carmakers affected by the floods comprise Ford, Renault, Nissan, BMW, TVS and Hyundai. The production facility of Ford has a production capacity of 3,40,000 engines and 2,00,000 cars per annum. It has been estimated that the Indian automotive hub will suffer losses up to $2.2 billion.

Another company that had to halt its operation was Apollo Tyres. The tyre manufacturer's plant at Oragadam was affected by the disaster, and the operations had to be halted.

Hyundai's CSR wing, Hyundai Motor India Foundation, is also conducting a series of relief activities in Sriperumbudur, Chennai, in order to help the affected families, by distributing food packets, home essentials and clothes.
