Car Sales September 2021: Maruti Suzuki Witnesses A Decline Of 46% Due To Chip Shortage

Maruti Suzuki India, the country's largest carmaker by volume, has released the monthly sales numbers for September 2021. Last month the carmaker's total sales stood at 86,380 units, witnessing a 46 per cent decline compared to 160,442 vehicles sold in September 2020. The company says that its sales volume was severely impacted due to a shortage of electronic components like semiconductor chips. Earlier, Maruti Suzuki had also said that it expects September production to decline by 60 per cent, which will affect sales as well. The company says that it took all possible measures to limit the adverse impact.

Maruti Suzuki's month-on-month (MoM) difference in sales volume was equally bad. Compared to 130,699 units sold in August 2021, the carmaker witnessed a MoM decline of 34 per cent. Maruti Suzuki's overall domestic sales for September 2021 stood at 68,815 units, 55 per cent down compared to 152,608 units sold in the same month last year. compared to 110,080 units sold in August 2021, MoM sales fell 37 per cent. Exports, on the other hand, was the silver lining for Maruti in September, at 17,565 units, a massive growth of 124 per cent compared to 7,834 units exported during the same month in 2020. However, compared to 20,619 units exported in August, the company saw a decline of nearly 15 per cent, last month.

Maruti's mini and subcompact segment, which includes cars like - Alto, S-Presso, Wagon R, Swift, Celerio, Ignis, Baleno, and Dzire - collectively accounted for 35,827 units. Compared to 111,459 units sold in September 2020 that's a massive 68 per cent decline, but compared to 66,038 units sold in August 2021, the company saw a decline of 46 per cent. Sales of the company's compact sedan Ciaz touched stood at 981 units, a 36 per cent decline compared to 1,534 units sold in September 2020, but a 54 per cent decline when compared to 2,146 units sold in August 2021.
Sales from the utility vehicle space, which includes the Vitara Brezza, Ertiga, XL6, Gypsy and S-Cross, stood at 18,459 units. That's nearly a 22 per cent drop compared to 23,699 units sold in September 2020, and a decline of 24 per cent compared to 24,337 units sold in August 2021. As for the van segment, Maruti sold 7,844 units of the Eeco van in September 2021, 30 per cent down compared to 11,220 units sold in September 2020, and a 26 per cent decline compared to 10,666 units sold in August 2021. Last month sales to other OEMs, that is Toyota, stood at 2,400 units.
In September 2021, Maruti Suzuki also sold 3,304 units of the Super Carry light commercial vehicle, achieving a considerable 55 per cent growth compared to 2,128 units sold in September 2020. However, compared to 2,588 units sold in August 2021, the company saw a MoM growth of 28 per cent.
