Car Sales November 2021: MG Motor India Reports A Decline Of 40% Due To Chip Shortage
Highlights
- MG Motor India sold 2,481 vehicles in November 2021
- Compared to November 2020, MG saw a YoY decline of 40%
- MG is focused on delivering the first batch of 5,000 Astor within 2021
MG Motor India has released the sales numbers for the month of November 2021, during which the company sold 2,481 vehicles in India. Compared to 4,163 units sold in November 2020, the company registered a massive decline of over 40 per cent year-on-year. MG says this was mainly due to the challenges imposed by the global semiconductor chip shortage, which has severely constrained production levels. A more apt comparison would be with October 2021, when the company sold 2,863 units in India, against which MG Motor India registered a month-on-month decline of 13 per cent.

In its official statement, MG Motor India said, "Enduring the industry challenges of global semiconductor chip shortage, which has severely constrained the production levels, MG Motor is continuously working towards delivering to customers their much-awaited MG cars on time."
Right now, the company is mainly focusing on the deliveries of its newly launched MG Astor compact SUV. While the booking numbers for the vehicle are unknown, MG had previously mentioned that it aims to deliver around 5000 units in India by the end of 2021.

Having said that, earlier in November, Gaurav Gupta, Chief Commercial Officer, MG Motor India had said that deliveries for the first batch of MG Astor could be delayed because of the semiconductor crunch. He also said, "We are working to deliver our batch 1, our first 5000 cars in this calendar year. But just in case, there's a spillover to next year, I can assure you all batch 1 customers will be protected at the launch pricing."
MG India says that currently the Astor, along with Hector, ZS EV and Gloster continues to attract strong customer interest.
