Italian motorcycle brand Cagiva is all set to make a return as a full-fledged motorcycle brand in production, but this time, it's set to return in an all-electric format. The Cagiva brand has been lying dormant for a few years now under the ownership of MV Agusta, but now it will make a sort of revival, as an electric motorcycle brand. An early prototype is expected to be revealed at the EICMA show later this year, according to MV investor Timur Sardarov, with the production units following around 12 to 14 months later.

The bikes are most likely to be small, electric off-road bikes, like the sporty Cagiva Elefant, but only this time they will be full electric. The adventure segment is what Cagiva is likely to focus on, considering MV Agusta doesn't have any models in this segment. The new motorcycles are expected to be mass production bikes, and are said to be 'young and fun' and most importantly 'accessible'. The battery and motor for the bikes are to be outsourced, although no details are available on the source of these components.

"Our work spirit is a lot in design and the structure engineering and mechanics."

"We don't have internal capabilities to design electrical motor and the battery and its software, not at the beginning for sure," Sardarov is quoted as saying.

Cagiva has an impressive history of street bikes, off-road bikes and racing success at the Dakar Rally, particularly in the 1980s and 1990s. The brand stopped production in 2012, when a decision was taken to focus on the MV Agusta brand. Now with MV Agusta receiving fresh capital investment, the decision to develop the Cagiva brand has been taken.
