BS6 Compliant Yamaha FZ, FZ-S Power Figures Leaked
Highlights
Yamaha Motor India announced earlier this year that will roll-out the Bharat Stage 6 (BS6) compliant two-wheelers by November 2019, and now details have been leaked on the updated versions of the FZ and FZ-S motorcycles. The 2020 Yamaha FZ, FZ-S will soon meet the stringent emission norms and a leaked document suggests that the motorcycles will see a revision in power figures. The leaked image reveals that the technical specifications remain unchanged on the updated FZ and FZ-S FI models with power coming from the same 149 cc single-cylinder engine, but the unit will make only 12.2 bhp, instead of the current 13.1 bhp on offer. That said, power does arrive early at 7250 rpm, as opposed to 8000 rpm on the current model.

The leaked document only gives us a glimpse at the power figure for now, but we do expect to see the torque value witness a marginal reduction. For reference, the 2019 Yamaha FZ FI develops 12.8 Nm of peak torque available at 6000 rpm. The reduction in performance has been an expected one, and is something we will see across several other two-wheelers as well, with manufacturers adding more equipment and tweaking the engines to meet the new emission norms.
The update though, will come as a disappointment for FZ fans that have been wanting a more powerful version of the 150 cc street-naked motorcycle. The Yamaha FZ has been positioned as a powerful and premium sports commuter, but has witnessed a drop in power figures since the second generation model rolled out in 2014. The original model introduced in 2008, produced 13.8 bhp and 13.6 Nm of peak torque from a 155 cc single-cylinder carburetted motor.
Barring the new equipment to meet the BS6 norms, and the revision figures, we do not expect any changes on the 2020 Yamaha FZ and the FZ-S. The FZ V3.0 was introduced in January this year sporting a bulk of changes including the new LED headlamp, revised instrument console, reworked tank, new step-up style single-seat, new exhaust muffler as part of the changes. The FZ currently retails from Rs. 98,680 (ex-showroom, Delhi), and is likely to see a marginal hike of about 10-15 per cent in prices when the BS6 version arrives. The popular selling FZ will be joined by the YZF-R15 V3.0 in the BS6 avatar as early as next month.
