BMW said last week that it will offer all-electric versions of the next-generation X3 and electric MINI models as it bolsters its foray into the segment. Earlier this month Reuters reported that BMW's management board were skipping the Paris Motor Show to hash out the company's electric vehicle strategy and lay out its new electric product push. The Bavarian luxury automaker's officials have now said the electric MINI is likely to debut in nearly three years.
With fellow automakers setting out aggressive pathways to herald the era of electric luxury vehicles, suffice it to say that BMW is facing intense pressure to keep up with its peers. This is despite the fact that it was the first among the German trio to venture into the electric cars segment. Though it launched the BMW i3 in 2013, followed by the the plug-in hybrid i8, the two have failed to amass satisfactory sales.
At the Paris Motor Show 2016, Mercedes-Benz revealed its sub-brand for electric cars - EQ. The three-ringed carmaker, on the other hand, had announced its intentions to launch three electric vehicles by 2020 earlier this year. And while we are discussing Germans and electric cars, Volkswagen also showcased the I.D. concept - "a highly automated electric car". The company said it will launch I.D.'s production model as a compact electric car in 2020.
Then there's Tesla that is targeting a July 2017 launch for the Model 3, which has already received 400,000 orders. Other than that, the American electric carmaker is striving to sell 80,000 or more electric cars in its current line-up.
