Bearing Maintenance: Why Is It Important?
Highlights
Maintaining a car is one of the most important aspects of owning it. Each part of a car requires special care. Otherwise, it might not function properly. One of the most overlooked parts of the car is the wheel bearings. These small yet extremely useful parts rarely get the attention that they deserve. Without wheel bearings in proper shape, it is extremely unsafe to drive.
What are wheel bearings?
The wheel bearings are a component of the wheel assembly. They connect the wheel and the axle. They consist of small steel balls that are enclosed in a ring. These balls ensure that the wheels turn smoothly without any friction. These, in a way, also support the entire weight of the vehicle.
Symptoms of faulty wheel bearings
Noises: The wheel bearings consist of steel balls bound to make noise. But, if the driver hears noises that weren't present before, that could be an issue that needs immediate attention. In addition, faulty bearings grinding on each other can cause the wheels to not turn smoothly.
Sensation of grinding: If the driver gets a sensation of grinding as the car is moving, then there is something wrong with the wheel system. That could mean that the wheel bearings are faulty.
Vibrations: If the passengers traveling in the car feel that the car is vibrating while the speed changes or the car turns, then it means there is something wrong with the ball bearings.
Pulling: When brakes are being applied, if the car seems to pull in one direction, then it could mean that the wheel bearings are at fault here.
Abnormal wear and tear: If the car owners notice an uneven amount of wear and tear on the tires or the brake pads without the car traveling much distance, then it could mean that the wheel bearings are faulty.
ABS failure: Anti-lock brakes are an essential part of the car's safety system. If that system malfunctions, it could mean that the wheel bearings are malfunctioning.
Problems with improper maintenance
Faulty bearings mainly have two effects, the smoothness and comfort of the ride are reduced, and the tires' lifetime is significantly reduced.
It is not safe to drive with damaged wheel bearings. First, the wheels could just stop in the middle of driving, leading to accidents. Second, damaged wheel bearings tend to put a lot of pressure on the CV joint, the hub, and the car's transmission. Third, there is a chance that the wheels completely fall off of the car.
It is pretty easy to get this issue fixed. But, first, contact a professional, and they can tell you the correct steps to take – whether to repair or replace the wheel bearings.
